Cardwell's Penstemon (Penstemon Cardwellii)

A woody stemmed plant that grows 4" - 12" tall with purple flowers in early summer. It spreads by layering and may form thick mats. Cardwell’s penstemon grows in full sun to light shade, and wants well-drained, moist to dry soils. Bright purple flowers add contrast to rock gardens or dry beds and it is attractive year-round. Hummingbirds and bumblebees are attracted to the flowers.

Western Bleeding Heart (Dicentra formosa)

Has lacy blue-green foliage and delicate heart-shaped pink flowers that appear in summer. It grows 10 to 20 inches tall in full to partial shade. Western bleeding heart can be an accent plant or groundcover that complements other shade-tolerant plants like ferns, hellebores, and primroses; and hummingbirds enjoy its flowers. It likes moist soil but not standing water. After being attended with careful water the first two years, it can adapt to our drier summers.

Blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium idahoense)

Not a grass at all but a member of the iris family, this clump-forming species has pretty blue star-like flowers in late spring. Idaho blue-eyed grass prefers moist soil in spring but tolerates summer drought. Plant in full sun. Plants grow about 6 – 10 inches tall. Deer-resistant. Perennial.

Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguineum)

A plant sale favorite, this lovely, thornless, deciduous shrub grows up to 10 feet tall. Tubular flowers appear in early spring and vary in color from pink to deep magenta. Very popular with hummingbirds, it blooms around the same time the hummingbirds are migrating back to the islands. Plant in sun to part shade in moist to fairly dry, well-drained soil.

Pacific rhododendron (Rhododendron macrophyllum)

A medium to large evergreen shrub growing up to 20 feet tall. The leaves are oblong and leathery. Flowers vary from light pink to rose purple, blooming from late spring to mid-summer. Plant in part shade or dappled sunlight in moist to somewhat dry soil. Tolerates deep shade but will produce more flowers along the forest edge or in part sun. Excellent under big trees in a woodland garden or as part of a hedgerow. Somewhat deer resistant. This species is the state flower of Washington.

Blue Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ssp caerulea)

This deciduous shrub/small tree is multi-stemmed and grows 10-30 feet tall and up to 18 feet across. Tiny, cream colored flowers in large flat-topped clusters bloom from late spring to mid-summer, followed by dark blue, edible berries. Full sun to part shade. Moist to dry soil. Fairly drought tolerant. Good for wildlife and butterflies.

Deer Fern (Struthiopteris spicant syn. Blechnum spicant)

A graceful, partially evergreen fern growing 1- 3 ft in height and width. Outer, sterile fronds are evergreen, fertile fronds are deciduous and grow up from the middle of the plant. Full or part shade, or dappled light, wet to moist soil. Excellent in shade or woodland gardens. Occurs naturally in low- to mid-elevations from AK to northern CA.

Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens)

A handsome evergreen tree, up to 100 ft in height and 12 ft in width. Its flat sprays of foliage resemble those of western red cedar, with cinnamon-colored seed cones that are much longer, up to an inch in length. Its dense, narrow, conical shape and fast growth make it a good evergreen screen or windbreak if planted in rows or drifts. Also good to use as a single specimen tree. More tolerant of drought and cold than western red cedar. Resists pests, tolerates poor soils and fairly dry conditions. Full sun or light shade, well drained soils. Fragrant. Occurs naturally in OR and CA.

Oxalis (Woodland Sorrel, Oxalis oregana)

This species forms a lush, solid, inviting carpet in a woodland garden. A low plant 2-6”, with 3 heart-shaped leaflets on each leaf and 1 funnel-shaped, white or rose-pink flower at end of each stalk; leaf and flower stalks both about the same length and attached to the plant at ground level. Flowers bring in pollinators.

Shore Pine (Pinus contorta var. contorta)

A fast-growing lowland pine, up to 45 ft in height, but often of lower and bushy stature. Common here in the San Juan Islands. Valuable for seaside plantings, useful as an evergreen screening in rows or drifts. Prefers full sun. Tolerates almost any dry to wet soil, but prefers moist or boggy conditions. Occurs naturally in dunes, bogs and rocky hillsides at low elevations near the coast, from AK to Northern CA.

Tall Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium)

A woody evergreen shrub with yellow blooms from March to May. It’s easy to grow and tolerates a wide range of light conditions but prefers partial shade. Tall Oregon grape needs acidic, low-nutrient, well-drained soil with occasional summer water. Butterflies, bees and hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers. The blue fruit is eaten by wildlife and enjoyed by people for jelly, wine, and dyes.

Woodland Strawberry (Fragaria vesca)

A fast-growing native with bright green serrated leaves and white flowers from April to June. It’s a low ground cover (less than 1 foot) that tolerates full sun to partial shade. Woodland strawberry works well under trees or taller shrubs. It spreads rapidly with runners and produces small, intensely flavored fruits. It needs moist, well-drained soil and moderate summer water.

If you’re not sure that you, or a friend or relative can pick up your order, please do not place an order. We regret that we cannot hold orders for late pickup. If your order is not claimed, it will be donated to the Family Resource Center or another county non-profit for distribution. 

1. ORDERING: All orders must be placed by 5 PM on May 12, 2021. No additional purchases are possible at pick-up time. All sales are final. No refunds are available after an order has been placed.

2. PICKUP PROCEDURES: 
Please wear a mask and practice social distancing as per Washington state and WSU guidelines when you pick up your plants.

San Juan Island: Pickup is at assigned times only on Sunday, May 23, 2021 between 9am and 1pm, in the Mullis Senior Community Center parking lot. 
After completing your order, you will receive an email confirmation and a link to choose your preference for a morning or early afternoon pick up assignment. You will receive an email with instructions and your specific pick up time after May 17th. (If you are available at any time for pick up, you do not need to fill out this form.)

Orcas Island: Pickup is on Sunday, May 23, at the Eastsound Fire Station parking lot between noon and 2pm. 

Lopez Island: Pick up is on Monday, May 24. We will contact you by email with details about the pickup location and time.
