Our WSU Master Gardener Foundation mission is to engage university-trained volunteers to empower and sustain diverse communities with relevant, unbiased, research-based horticulture and environmental stewardship education. With this mission in mind we offer our Gardening Workshop annually in October to our gardening community.
The workshop will be held virtually in 2023 and will include eight presentations. Our speakers are University professors, Extension educators, professional gardeners and accomplished Master Gardeners who will share their knowledge, experience and beautiful photographs of plants, flowers, birds and bees and garden pests. The presentations will be recorded for registrants unable to attend the virtual presentation.
Our 2023 keynote speaker will be renowned author, conservationist and scientist Doug Tallamy whose many books include “Bringing Nature Home” and “Nature’s Best Hope”. He is an entomologist and gardener who encourages us to think of our gardens and natural areas as wildlife preserves.
Two hundred plus Washington state gardeners have attended our virtual workshop series annually since 2020. Our speakers and presentations have received excellent reviews from home gardeners and master gardeners alike. Please join us for another excellent virtual learning experience in 2023!

We just held a successful Spring Plant Sale selling hundreds of unique vegetable starts and landscape perennials this May, just in time for Mother’s Day. We will hold the sale in person on San Juan Island and Orcas Island again in May, 2024. We will have a variety of tomato, pepper, and herb starts as well as perennials. The location and dates will be announced in January of 2024.
Vegetable varieties will be those we love for their wonderful flavors and dependability in our short summers, and nearly all will be heirlooms or open-pollinated varieties not available elsewhere. We will have “Arc of Taste” heirlooms, a living catalog of delicious and distinctive food; Master Gardener taste-test winners; a legendary number of cherry tomatoes and other tomatoes, peppers, and herbs that work well in small gardens or containers.
Master Gardeners grow all of the perennials in their gardens, so they’re “island-adapted” to our unique maritime climate. Each year’s selections include ground covers, perennial flowers, ornamental grasses, and small shrubs, including many native plants.
All plants will be affordably priced. Proceeds from the sale are used to support Master Gardener programs such as the SJI Master Gardener Demonstration Garden, which provides over 1,500 pounds of produce every year for the SJI Food Bank. Funds also support this sale; community education programs; Plant Problem Diagnostic Clinics on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan Islands; as well as the Orcas School Native Plant Garden and the Lopez Heirloom Apple Orchard.
Thank you for joining us to celebrate gardening at our plant sale this year and again in 2024!
