Lopez Heritage Apple Orchard

4/6/2017

In the 1800’s, Lopez Island was a fishing and agricultural area. Apples were an important economic crop in the community. The Master Gardener Foundation is planning a heritage apple orchard in the village center. The project recognizes our past and present agricultural community, will provide visitors and residents access to this important aspect of our history. It would educate the community and visitors alike about the many different varieties of apples, their importance and uses. Lopez Master Gardeners have started apple trees by grafting scion wood from historic Lopez apple trees and locally important heritage apples. We hope to start planting this month.

Next Clinic August 4th on Orcas Island, bring your plant samples!

Picture
Master Gardeners from Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands worked together today at the Extension office to evaluate and diagnose eleven plant samples. Questions ranged from why new growth on two pines was dying (eriophyid mites was our conclusion) to whether moss growth was hurting trees (no and it's a sign of good, clean air quality).  Glenda from Lopez wins the award for most innovative trip to the clinic- she and her husband flew over to the Friday Harbor airport in their plane!

The next clinic is on Orcas Island August 4th at the ferry landing meeting room- please join us!

Mary Galli (MG class of 2015) and Carol Kibble, the MG "Ask Us" team at FM on a beautiful first Saturday of June.

Many interesting questions today. How about this one: Grafted pear tree with 3 varieties; for past 2 years the same variety has turned black and dropped fruit. The others are fine. Any one have an answer?
