In the 1800’s, Lopez Island was a fishing and agricultural area. Apples were an important economic crop in the community. The Master Gardener Foundation is planning a heritage apple orchard in the village center. The project recognizes our past and present agricultural community, will provide visitors and residents access to this important aspect of our history. It would educate the community and visitors alike about the many different varieties of apples, their importance and uses. Lopez Master Gardeners have started apple trees by grafting scion wood from historic Lopez apple trees and locally important heritage apples. We hope to start planting this month.
